FORESTRY TECHNICIAN (PERMANENT / INTERMITTENT) – SANTA CRUZ DISTRICT / NATURAL RESOURCES / TWIN LAKES STATE BEACH
The reporting location for this position is the Natural Resources Program at Twin Lakes State Beach.This position will work under close supervision of the District’s Senior Environmental Scientist (Supervisory).
We are looking for a team player to work in some of the most beautiful parks in the State Park System including Big Basin, Butano, Castle Rock, Henry Cowell, and Forest of Nisene Marks State Parks. The incumbent will work with the Sr. Environmental Scientist to, implement, and manage forest, range, and watershed management, protection, and planning, in support of the Wildfire and Forest and Reslience Program. Assists in implementing forest stewardship projects in forests throughout the Santa Cruz District. This position will assist with the prescribed fire management program and implement District prescribed burn projects including environmental compliance, smoke management, burn permits, and public outreach and notification. The position will implement fire hazard fuel reduction projects. Assists and receives training to become part of the prescribed fire management program. Directs and oversees contractors, CalFire and/or California Conservation Corps labor crews to meet treatment area standards and specifications.

The selected candidate is required to submit to a background investigation process utilizing Live Scan fingerprinting prior to appointment.
This position may work up to 1500 hours in any calendar year.

Incumbent will be expected to perform fieldwork under a variety of environmental conditions, including inclement weather and rugged terrain. Duties require the ability to hike up to 10 miles in steep terrain while carrying packs weighing up to 40 lbs. Work may occur in areas with environmental hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and uneven terrain. Operate 4x4 vehicles safely on backcountry fire roads. Maintain or develop familiarity with the flora and fauna of California’s Central Coast. All tasks must be performed in accordance with Departmental safety policies and the District’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP).
Per California Code of Regulations (CCR) , this is a sensitive position, and therefore subject to drug and alcohol testing. It should be noted that testing is not mandatory, but is allowed to be conducted only if and when there is a determination of reasonable suspicion as defined in CCR .
